Description

From executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron comes the most highly anticipated television event of the year, The Wiz LIVE! Rising star Shanice Williams leads an all-star cast featuring Queen Latifah (The Wiz), Mary J. Blige (Evillene), David Alan Grier (Cowardly Lion), Ne-Yo (Tin Man), Elijah Kelley (Scarecrow), Uzo Aduba (Glinda), Amber Riley (Addaperle), Common (Bouncer), Stephanie Mills (Auntie Em) and Circque du Soliel. The Wiz LIVE! Will be broadcast nationwide on NBC in a three-hour live broadcast on December 3, 2015. The album is the companion piece to this sure-to-be-spectacular event and includes the hit songs "Ease on Down the Road, " "Brand New Day" and "Home." Winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, The Wiz was a massive Broadway hit that ran for over four years, made a star of then-unknown Stephanie Mills and spawned a feature film starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. Now, a Tony-winning creative team, the imaginative Cirque du Soleil Theatrical and a diverse cast of show-stoppers create an eye-popping new take unlike anything ever seen.

I had been eagerly awaiting this soundtrack. After listening to it, I am so glad I bought this. Of the three recordings of "The Wiz" that are available (the original Broadway cast, the soundtrack to the film, and this one), this one is by far the best. The songs are all amazing and well-performed.Newcomer Shanice Williams is amazing as Dorothy. Her vocal range is amazing. She belt out the finale, "Home" and it is simply breathtaking. The original Dorothy, Staphanie Mills, is also amazing as Dorothy's Aunt 'Em with her heartfelt rendition of "The Feeling We Once Had."Elijah Kelly hits all the high notes of the Scarecrow, and he was really fun with "You Can't Win" (although, that is my one critique. That this production used "You Can't Win" from the movie rather than "I was Born on the Day before Yesterday" from the show)I had heard of Ne-Yo, but I've never heard his music before. So, his performance was pleasantly surprising, especially his emotional rendition of "What Would I Do (if I Could Feel)."I honestly don't know what I was expecting with David Alan Grier, but his "Mean Ole Lion" blew me out of the water. And then our four leads together were also amazing. Blending perfectly for "Ease on Down the Road," and the new song written for this musical "We Got it"The rest of the supporting cast was amazing as well. Glee star Amber Riley showed off her amazing pipes with a funked up version of "He's The Wizard." Orange is the New Black star Uzo Aduba completely surprised me with an emotional and tear-jerking "Believe in Yourself." And Queen Latifah was good as the Wiz. I felt she was holding back in her two songs "So you Wanted to Meet the Wizard" and "Y'all Got it" but she was still amazing. For me, however, the real show-stealer was Mary J. Blige as the Wicked Witch of the West. Her jazzy new version of "Don't Nobody Bring me No Bad News" is my personal favorite song on the soundtrack.Overall, I highly recommend this recording.
